History

Turramurra, which is aboriginal for big hill, is a very hilly suburb with large residential blocks and historically has the highest average rainfall in Sydney. This rainfall supports the beautifully groomed parklands and residential gardens that are so common in Turramurra.

Originally named Eastern Rd, development began in Turramurra when the first land grant was bestowed in 1822. These land grants were used for timber getting, market gardens and orchards.

Turramurra was given its aboriginal name after the opening of the railway station in January 1890. This same year the first post office was opened and Turramurra was on the way as a retail and commercial centre.

Between 1910 and 1920 subdivisions were made with significant development occurring in the 1960’s.

Commercial Centres

There are a number of retail centres scattered throughout Turramurra. The main retail centre is located around the railway station, and close to the Pacific Highway whilst other smaller centres are located in North Turramurra, South Turramurra, Princes Street and Eastern Road.
